Wheel Detail: Homemade Cleaning For Chrome Wheels
There are several top of the line auto detailing products that clean wheels to a shine, as well as simple household maintenance products like the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. But what if you're looking for something more homemade or economical? Homemade cleaning solutions are popular among do-it-yourself detailers who enjoy professional wheel detail results without spending a penny.
Old Fashioned Elbow Grease
It's a well known trade secret that quality auto soap with some good old fashioned elbow grease can remove dirt and brake dust buildup on chrome wheels, just as good as any specialty cleaner. While you may sacrifice time and get a little wet, the right cleaning brushes and determination can make chrome shine like new without spending extra.
A simple piece of household aluminum foil from your kitchen is a great way to clean and even remove rust spots from chrome wheels. Just tear off a good size piece of the aluminum foil from off the roll, and rub the chrome in circular motions with the dull side of the foil. Some detailers dip the foil in vinegar to help speed up the process.
Vinegar and Acids
Vinegar is the wonder cleaner, serving all kinds of purposes for cleaning homes and cars. Besides working great on your windows, vinegar can be used to clean chrome, too, because of its acidic qualities. You can use as little as a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water by simply spraying and wiping, or try it full strength if necessary. Some detailers also use lemon juice for wheel detail, as the properties are similar.
Have a baby in the house? If there's baby oil under the bathroom sink, try a little of this gentle oil on a soft brush or towel to get chrome wheels clean. Baby oil removes stains and can also be used to polish your chrome with gleaming results. Bear in mind you only need to use a little at a time to get the job done.
Homemade detailing solutions are a great way to save money and still be satisfied with the results after you detail your car. These every day products are inexpensive and are usually items already on hand in the kitchen or bath. While professional auto detailing products are fun to use and get more attention, don't be apprehensive about trying a home remedy to make your chrome wheels shine.
